- Thoroughly cover the basics and ensure you're happy with basic algebra, including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Take your time to get this right and do lots of practice questions, by dividing things into manageable chunks.
- Probability is a common topic so ensure you know key rules, e.g. probabilities add up to one.
- Be confident converting between percentages, fractions and decimals.
- Practice angle questions and know how to find missing angles and/or lengths.
- Revise drawing graphs - these are easy marks, so learn how to draw and label different charts and graphs.
- If you're stuck on harder concepts, ask for help as early as possible.
- If you're finding things too easy, make sure you do timed practice questions to ensure you're doing the right tier.

Do- Go through your syllabus and tick things off.
- Spend time practicing exam questions regularly e.g. do one question per night in the weeks leading up to your exams. - Ask teachers for extra help, go to lunchtime classes and booster sessions if you find things difficult. - Stay determined and persevere - Maths can be hard but keep practising and stay focused to succeed! - Use online resources to supplement your learning. - Try learning songs or watching videos to help you remember key information. - Learn all of your formulae well in advance. - Ask other people to explain concepts to you in different ways - this will help you to learn and understand things. |
Don't- Put yourself down.
- Use practice papers too early - you will likely do some in class, so perhaps don't do extra ones outside of class until around Easter time. - Try and switch to higher tier without speaking to your teacher if you don't know 100% of foundation content. - Get confused - make sure you know which exam board and qualification you're doing so you don't accidentally get stressed about teaching yourself things that aren't on your syllabus! - Get worried if other people are finding things easier or if you are running out of time in your first few practice papers - keep doing them and you'll improve. |
